Ralph G. Whitelaw, 94, of Cedar Creek, MO died Friday, January 12, 2018 at Cox Medical Center in Springfield. Ralph had just finished feeding Dakota; his best 4-legged friend of 20+ years on whose back he had ridden many a trail.

Ralph was born on June 27 in Cheshire England, spent some of his early childhood in Egypt before returning to England to complete his education at Birkenhead Institute, England. After graduating Ralph started out as an apprentice engineer and junior draughtsman for a shipbuilder in Birkenhead, England before entering the merchant navy in 1944 where he rose to Chief Engineer by age 25. After leaving the merchant navy in 1952 he met and fell in love with Ann Whitelaw whom he married just before emigrating to Canada in 1953. After selling books and magazines door-to-door to make enough money to survive he landed a job with Canada Steamship Lines to begin his career as a marine salvage engineer. In 1963 Ralph became the Principal Surveyor for the Far East Area for United States Salvage Association, at which time he, Ann and their three sons moved to Yokohama, Japan.

After finishing his career with US Salvage Ralph along with his "1st mate" (Ann) sailed Bombadilla, a 33-ft. sailboat, from Falmouth England to the Canary Islands and then across the Atlantic to the Caribbean where they dropped anchor on the island of Tortola in the British Virgin Islands. During this time in the islands Ralph continued to work as an Independent Marine Surveyor & Consultant. Then in 1986 Ralph and Ann sailed to Kemah, TX where Ralph continued his consulting business until 1992. After retiring Ralph and Ann began to travel the country with their trailer before buying a ranch in Hurricane Utah where they kept and rode horses. When the heat of Hurricane became a bit too much they decided to return to the home state of their three Missouri Fox Trotters. Ralph greatly enjoyed the rolling hills and lakes of this beautiful corner of Missouri and deeply appreciated the friendships he made.

Ralph is survived by his wife, Ann of Cedar Creek; his three sons, Colin, Chris and Robin and three grandchildren, Eleni, Sara and Bianca.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Kissee-Schofield-Eakins Funeral Home, Forsyth, MO.
